Nintendo Says "No Problems" With Aussie Super Smash Bros. Brawl Discs

According to a Nintendo Australia, we've apparently been spared the problems US gamers faced after the original release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The company did admit the dual-layer nature of the game disc had caused issues in the past, but that it hasn't had any reports from Australian users.

The thing is, this statement contradicts comments from Kotaku AU readers who have had SSBB give them less than their money's worth. I can't say I've copped any grief from my review copy, but I might just be lucky.

Regardless, Nintendo Oz recommends you call its support hotline (1300 362 746) if you are experiencing problems, and it'll do its best to fix you up.

Hamish Blake Meets Cooking Guide On DS

I don't know about you, but 2Day FM's Hamish Blake is a funny guy. Along with Tony Martin, his appearances were by far the best on Ten's Thank God You're Here. But enough about that! Nintendo has recruited Blake for a local TV spot advertising the publisher's Cooking Guide on DS. You won't wet yourself, but it's definitely worth a couple of laughs.

Nintendo says the ad will appear starting from tonight, so consider this a sneak peek. We like those, we do.

Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust Preorders At EB Games, Yet To Be Rated By OFLC

Vivendi made it clear back in mid-January that another Leisure Suit Larry game was in development. If the news didn't grab your attention, I can't blame you - Larry's previous outing, Magna Cum Laude was refused classification by the OFLC in September of 2004. Not a point in Box Office Bust's favour, as I'm sure you'll agree.

Despite Magna Cum Laude's fate, and the fact Box Office Bust has yet to be rated, EB Games Australia has preorders going for the new title. While this isn't unusual - many retailers make unrated games available for preorder - until the OFLC passes judgement, my hopes remain subdued.

Pop, Now Available In Australia, New Zealand & Europe

The title, developed by Aussie studio Nnooo, was delayed slightly while localisation issues were sorted out.

Well, the wait is over! If you'd like to grab the bubble-bursting game, it will set you back 700 Wii points ($10.50).

Rumour: Fallout 3 Refused Classification Because Of Drug Use?

Fallout 3 has its fair share of dismemberment and decapitation. If the Office of Film and Literature Classification was going to have an issue with anything, I thought it would be the blood and gore.

Apparently not. It seems the board has deemed the game too extreme for Australian gamers, according to a post on the Gamespot AU forums - but it has nothing to do with popping skulls with rifle rounds:

Apparently the game includes the use of Morphine by your character. (I assume as some sort of "healthpack" or "stimpack"). By all accounts this did not sit well with the Board as the portrayal of the unregulated use of proscribed substances is a bit of a no no and will damage the fragile minds of Australia's game-playing populace.
The post says the information comes from a "senior" person in the organisation.

Please note that a post on a forum is hardly proof. Red Ant has been contacted, but has failed to provide a comment. We'll just have to wait for the OFLC to add Fallout 3 to the classification database.

If it does turn out to be true, it will be the second RC in the space of a month. Really makes you wonder what's happening with that R18+ rating...

Kotaku Australia Originals: You Guys Are Awesome Edition

Yes, you guys are awesome. Kotaku Australia is quickly approaching the one-year old mark, and in that time its reach, and the size of its community, have grown tremendously.

There's no way this could have happened without your participation, be it an entry to a competition, 500 words on the state of games classification, or an entire essay on how fire mages have had a raw deal in World of Warcraft. Every contribution helps, and I hope to maintain Kotaku AU's position as one of the top gaming blogs in the country, if not the best. So continue sending in tips, making thoughtful comments, pointing out my mistakes and, especially of all, reading.

Now, onto June! Well, back to June.

Last month saw the debut of a unique Kotaku AU feature called Game A Week, where I endeavour to code a new game every seven days, then make it available for free. I've managed three games so far, with a fourth due next Monday. The latest one in development is called "SimMMO" - feel free to have a guess as to what it's about.

If you'd like to check out any of the Game A Week entries, I've linked them here:
Game A Week 3: Blockshooter

Age of Conan saw a lot of attention. Horse griefing, small boobs - whatever, the MMO had its time in the spotlight. Rock Band 2 was announced, causing Australians to wonder if EA had forgotten the fact that the first game isn't even out here yet. The publisher also provoked some ill feelings by forcing Australians to use the NZ EA Store to purchase the Spore Creature Creator.

Finally, Shellshock 2 was refused classification, and perks galore were uncovered for Fallout 3.

That's June in a few paragraphs Time to brace ourselves for July.

Play Doom 3 As An Isometric Shooter

Sure, you could play Doom 3 in its boring, by-the-numbers first-person mode, but why would you want to when there's a mod to transform it into an isometric 3D shooter stuffed full of chunky excitement?

The mod Z-Hunter comes close to accomplishing this feat. While you can't play the original game with an isometric view, Z-Hunter does offer "8 maps, 2 unique weapons, unique player animations [and] over 20 enemies custom designed for this style of play", according to the description on the website. Slap in a custom soundtrack and you've got quite a package. There's even a short back story to help get you in the mood. It mentions pussies and maggots, but it's not what you think.

No co-op or deathmatch functionality from what I can see, but that doesn't stop it from being infinitely awesome.

Aussie Dev Firemint Releases Sims DJ, First iPod Game

iPhone gaming is growing at its own, methodic pace. EA's interested, Sega wants in, Nnooo has a few ideas and even Bioware has its thinking hand stroking its chin. Great stuff, sure, but it makes you wonder what happened to the whole iPod gaming movement.

Never fear, Australian developer Firemint is holding down the fort with Sims DJ. Yes, a few months back CEO Rob Murray stated the studio was excited about the iPhone. Yeah, the iPod isn't the iPhone, but Sims DJ is a step in the right direction.

I haven't played Sims DJ (I don't even own an iPod, let alone anything from Apple), but apparently review site Pocketgamer gave it 8/10. Not too shabby.

The product page on Firemint's website says the game was released on June 9. No worries guys, just let us know a little sooner next time!

Do you have mad Wii Sports skills? A Wii remote bowling arm that rivals those of real world professionals? Does the idea of winning things excite you?

If you said "yes" or nodded your head with restrained enthusiasm at any of these questions, you should check out the Wii Championships in Melbourne's Federation Square. Activities will run between 10AM and 5PM on July 5 & 6, with daily champions receiving a Wii and five games. 500 Wii backpacks are also available for keen entrants.

As an aside, the ACMI's Game On exhibition ends on July 13, so if you do head down, be sure to check this out while you have the chance.

Full release after the jump.

Australian Xbox 360 Price Cuts Today, Details & Warning Included

We've already seen the rain before the storm, with Big W selling discount Xbox 360 Arcades and Dick Smith purging stock of its Halo 3 models. Two readers, both from EB Games, have sent in matching information regarding an official price drop across all 360 consoles.

We also have a warning from one of our sources regarding Arcade consoles:

I would advise customers to stay clear from 360 Arcade consoles at the moment as the ones shipping into stores are actually refurbished models with NO HDMI output. If in doubt, check to see if the machine itself has the port and the manufacture dates on the console (not the box as they are being re-stickered and can be different to what's inside).
This may only apply to EB Games, but keep this info at hand wherever you decide to shop.

Now hit the jump for the new prices!

Update #1: A press release has just arrived, straight from Microsoft. It's after the jump too.

Update #2: Microsoft has contacted us regarding the "quality" of current Xbox 360 Arcades. According to AU/NZ Xbox Group Product Marketing Manager Jeremy Hinton, all Arcade units coming from MS are brand-new. It can't comment however on the actions of individual retailers.

Druids, Paladins & Shamans, Oh My: Why Hybrid Classes Don't Work

I should preface this by saying the idea behind a hybrid class is fantastic. I'm the sort of player that can't stand being pigeon-holed. I like flexibility. To be stuck in the same role for months, even years, in a massively multiplayer online game sounds like torture - the sort you'd endure if someone were to swap your butt with your gonads and force you to sit the same way you always have.

Ouch? You better believe it.

No one likes being sidelined, underpowered or having their class poorly understood by their peers, but these are the issues hybrids have had to endure since the dawn of massively multiplayer games. Is there a solution to the hybrid problem, or should players of classes like the Druid, Paladin and Shaman face the fact that they will never be balanced?

Ridiculous Price Of Games In Australia Gets Mainstream Attention

I often use the example of Activision doubling the price of Call of Duty 4 on Steam to illustrate how dire the "price of games" situation has become in Australia, but Andrew Ramadge of News.com.au has uncovered a better one:

... Gamers who visit the Steam and Electronic Arts websites are charged up to five times more to download popular titles like Medal Of Honour: Airborne -- which Australians can buy and download for $99.95, while users in the US pay just $21.15 ($US19.95).
But you guys already know how crazy the situation is. Thank [insert deity here] for importing, right?

Yes, we can import, but that doesn't mean everyone else should have to cough up the cash. And why should we be forced to look overseas in the first place? That just doesn't make sense to me.

It's unlikely prices will come down anytime soon - the publishers would vomit at the lost profits - so buying games will continue to be an online affair for us (minus Steam, of course).

The article also notes how the ACCC is powerless to do anything and, unsurprisingly, that none of the publishers were willing to talk about the problem.

Want A Cheap Halo Edition Xbox 360? How Does $265 Sound?

Update: The product page has been taken down; it looks like someone at Dick Smith may have made a boo-boo. EcoGamer recommends you give your local store a ring to see if it is willing to sell the console at the reduced price.

Madness. Utter, utter madness. Anthony at EcoGamer sends word that Dick Smith Electronics is currently selling its stock of Halo Edition 360s for the stupid price of $264.50. These are Pro units, with a good chance of having the cooler Falcon chipset.

This news comes hot on the cheap-arse heels of Big W's discount Xbox 360 Arcades. I don't know if it's the retailers or Microsoft that's flipped their lids, but someone has clearly gone nuts with the "on-sale" stickers.

If you don't already own a 360, you might want to grab one. I doubt you'll see prices like this again soon.

Halo Xbox 360 $US 264.50 [EcoGamer, thanks Anthony]

Diablo III Art, Inspired By Titan Quest

I was going through a bunch of Diablo III screenshots, mourning the possible demise of the Necromancer, when I spotted this shot of a Barbarian character pounding the unlife out of a few skeletons. You'll notice he stands defiant on a circular stone ruin with ancient script imprinted around its circumference.

Upon seeing this image (on the left) I thought I recognised the ruin. So, I loaded up Titan Quest (*ick*), ran into the first town and took the screen cap on the right. Notice anything?

Okay, so they're not identical, but the similarities are hard to ignore. I'm not sure if the ruins in Diablo III serve as a town portal, but if they do, I have to wonder: Is someone from the now-defunct Iron Lore working at Blizzard, or has an artist on the Diablo III team been playing too much Titan Quest?

In all seriousness, it's just a coincidence. This is not another Limbo of the Lost, and it would be silly to suggest otherwise. Just have a smirk and move along!

Larger pictures after the jump.

Note: I'd be first in line to describe Titan Quest as the most shameless Diablo clone ever made, so don't think I'm trying to show Diablo III is doing it here!

If you're wondering if your phone is QR-enabled, here's the info you need (taken from the Giz AU post):

... Either a NextG handset from Telstra (you'll probably have to download the software to make it work), or certain Nokia phones (with additional software).
If this sounds like you, hit the link below.

Out of proportion? Yes. Computer generated? That too. Do these facts bother you? Not in the slightest.

With Diablo III announced, Starcraft II well on its way and Wrath of the Lich King drawing closer, it's nice to take a look at the bigger picture.

Hey EA, No One In Australia Cares About Rock Band 2

Rock Band 2. Recently hinted at, and now confirmed, I'm sure most of the world is as excited about the sequel as it was when Guitar Hero 2 was announced by Activision.

Well, everyone in the world except Australia. Yes, 7 months on from its US release, we're still waiting for Harmonix's rhythm game to debut here. 7 months on, EA has failed to provide any reason for the delay, or even a vague street date, leaving us to feed desperately on retailer estimates. 7 months on, and resentment continues to build for both publisher EA and developer Harmonix.

EA's silence has forced gamers, once excited about the possibility of playing the game, to either boycott its release or import it from overseas. Desirable options? Not really, but what choice has EA left us?

I say "once again", because Simon's previously coaxed his lady to play Team Fortress 2 and Bioshock.

My choice of classic line: "Can you actually make her have small boobs?" No, Simon's girlfriend, it's Conan.

Why Shellshock 2 Was Refused Classification [Update]

Update: Since posting this story, Atari has made it clear it has no comment regarding the reasons for the ban. As such, I've contacted the OFLC for additional information.

One June 20, Rebellion's Shellshock 2 was refused classification in Australia. When we asked Eidos' distributor Atari if there were plans to edit the game and try for an MA 15+ rating, it replied in the negative.

We know the OFLC has a thing against excessive blood, decapitation and dismemberment, so I assumed it was one (or a combination) of these elements that earned Shellshock 2 an RC. Atari did provide a comment, but has since retracted the statement.

Another Perk & The First Ever Fallout 3 Cheat Code?

Recently I posted about some perks I saw during Pete Hines' Fallout 3 demo last Monday. Going through my notes, I realised I missed one! Called Strong Back, it allows you to carry an extra 100 pounds of equipment. Again, it's an oldie from the previous games, altered to suit the mechanics of the new title.

I should mention that Bloody Mess was originally a trait. It seems it's been changed to a perk for Bethesda's instalment.

Now... about this cheat. Is it god mode? Unlimited ammo? A second Dogmeat? You'll find out after the jump.

Yeah, that one.

Now, other retailers (such as GAME) have a similar bundle (the notable difference being a Brotherhood of Steel figurine instead of the PVC Vault Boy bobblehead), and some might believe it's the Collector's Edition.
Game A Week 3: Blockshooter

Blockshooter is the third game to come out of Kotaku Australia's Game A Week feature. If Game A Week is new to you, I suggest you give Zafehouse and Wizkill a go. Both of these (and Blockshooter) were coded in seven days by your resident Kotaku AU editor (in other words, me).

Blockshooter is a combination of Breakout and Space Invaders. It's your job to pilot a little ship, shooting at coloured blocks that come your way. Shooting multiple blocks of the same colour will award you a point multiplier. Destroying entire segments will drop a "piece", which can be collected and added to your ship. You lose points by getting hit or allowing blocks to slip past you.

That's the nuts and bolts of it. If you'd like to give it a go, hit the jump for a download link and developer's diary.

PS. Yes, this has come out on Monday instead of Friday. I've decided to shift the Game A Week schedule by two days, so I can have the weekend to playtest and debug. Don't worry, I'm sticking with the whole "seven days to code" requirement.
